Masterclass – Painting Miniatures with Elizabeth Beckley

When: Jan 30-31 2016
Where: Gamers Vault
Cost: $70 USD per day (American $$)
About: Two (2) one-day classes of intensive 8-hour material taught by none other than Elizabeth Beckley

Here are the full classes descriptions:

Painting Miniatures with Elizabeth Beckley

Come join award winning artist and professional painter Elizabeth Beckley. Learn the technique of using layering to achieve smooth blends while painting. These two classes are hands on, all students must have a basic understanding of painting and come to class ready to paint! Each class will cover basic forms of composition and color choice as well as demonstrations that will be applied in class. Each class is a separate day of instruction on a different miniature. Day 1 will cover a standard realistic human figure while day 2 will cover painting a chibi miniature.

Day 1

Day 1 will include a full day of learning to paint skin tones, hair and clothes in the style of layering paint to achieve smooth blends. Non Metallic Metal, the technique of painting metal without the use of metal paints, will also be taught. The class will focus on pushing highlights and shadow to advance skill level along with color choice while learning how to paint all of these. Students will get to have a hands on experience, painting alongside the instructor while she covers the various techniques. Elizabeth will demonstrate to the class the application and technique of the subject, for example, flesh tones. This will be demonstrated by Elizabeth painting the example and than having students take what they are shown and apply it to the model. The instructor will help each student with the painting process and answer questions as needed. Questions and additional demonstrations of anything not covered in the class will be added if time permits at the end of the class. Miniatures will be provided.

Day 1 Class Breakdown

Painting basics 30 minutes- covering priming and the use of different color primers as well as any questions about simple techniques including assembly and clean up.

Flesh tones 2.5 hours- Flesh tones will cover painting skin and what are the best colors to use for different types of flesh. Flesh tones will also cover painting the face, the best part of the model and usually the hardest. Hair will be included in this section of instruction as well.

Cloth and clothes 2hours- this will cover basic cloth and covering bigger surfaces like capes and painting leather.

Non metallic metal and weapons 1.5-2 hours- instruction will be given on painting non metallic metal and how to apply it to various surfaces like armor and weapons.

Other- 1 hour or whatever extra time is left in class will be spent answering any additional questions and demos.

Day 2

Day 2 will focus on the layering technique of painting and applying it to the stylistic chibi model, like those produced for the board games Super Dungeon Explore or Arcadia Quest. Painting instruction will cover how to paint the entire model. Chibi models offer different painting techniques than standard sized human models because of their broader surfaces and skewed proportions. Students will get to have a hands on experience, painting alongside the instructor while she covers the various techniques. Elizabeth will demonstrate to the class the application and

technique of the subject, for example, flesh tones. This will be demonstrated by Elizabeth painting the example and than having students take what they are shown and apply it to the model. The instructor will help each student with the painting process and answer questions as needed. Questions and additional demonstrations of anything not covered in the class will be added if time permits at the end of the class. Miniatures are provided.

Day 2 Class Breakdown

Painting basics 15-30 minutes- discuss what’s the best color primer to use for chibi miniatures.

Chibi flesh tones 1-1.5 hours- flesh tones will cover painting skin tones as well as lining.

Chibi eyes 1-1.5 hours- step-by-step instruction on how to paint the most stylized part of the miniature, the eyes!

Chibi hair 1-1.5 hours- painting will cover several different styles of painting hair on chibis.

Clothes 1-1.5 hours- how to paint cloth and different materials such as leather.

Weapons and Non-Metallic Metal 1-2 hours- taking the non-metallic metal technique and applying it to various surfaces. Gold and silver metal will be covered.

Other- Any extra time left over after scheduled instruction for additional questions and demos
